Richard Cowan, the internationally-renowned American bass-baritone, invited me to sing this summer at the prestigious Lyrique-en-Mer Festival de Belle-Île. Founded in 1998 by Mr. Cowan, Lyrique-en-Mer is the largest opera festival in Western France. It celebrates 15 years this summer. The festival showcases the finest opera singers from around the world in two staged operas, one sacred work, and over ten concerts every summer. Each year only eight to twelve aspiring opera singers are selected from hundreds to participate in the festival’s young artist program. During the six-week festival, I will be engaged to understudy the role of Clorinda in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, sing in the ensemble of Verdi’s Otello and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, perform in ten concerts of opera scenes and arias, and participate in over 15 hours of masterclasses given by visiting international artists.
